Puyallup mayor announces run for state senate

Puyallup Mayor Julie Door launched a campaign for state senate March 5.

Door is expected to run for Sen. Hans Zeiger’s current seat, representing the 25th legislative district.

She became mayor in January after more than six years on the City Council.

Some of her most notable pushes have been for a new public safety building, and her initiative, #LoveMyPuyallup, to promote more positivity and unity within the community.

“In my time on the Puyallup City Council, I have worked with leaders of all political persuasions to improve our schools, public safety and invest in our local economy,” she said in a statement. “Olympia needs more leaders willing to put aside divisive politics and work toward solutions on our region’s biggest challenges.”

Door began in politics after rallying neighbors against a halfway house on Shaw Road. She said the property needed to offer more resources to clients and had limited access to public transportation and social services.

She spurred support for a 2013 ordinance that bars more than one registered sex offender or violent felon from living in a halfway house without services.

First-term state Rep. Chris Gildon (R-District 25, Position 2) also is vying for the seat.

He decided to run for senate after Zeiger announced his intention to run for Pierce County Council member Pam Roach’s seat. Roach is set to retire at the end of 2020.

Door ran in 2018 to represent District 25, Position 1 in the state House. She lost in the Democratic primary to Jamie Smith.

She also owns Willows Chiropractic Clinic & Therapeutic Massage in Puyallup.
