Sisters offer Puyallup children’s book for free to parents, teachers during pandemic
Two sisters wrote a children’s book on Puyallup and have made it free to download during the pandemic.
Tacoma natives Nancy and Julia Glen wrote “Puyallup Adventures,” where a class of animals goes on an hunt to find clues scattered across the city. Along the way, the students learn about Puyallup’s history.
The Glen sisters began writing children’s books with a local narrative to help students appreciate history close to home. They published a Tacoma-based book last year.
Nancy Glen, a librarian at Puyallup’s Emerald Ridge High, said local school districts, including Puyallup and Tacoma, have added the book to their recommended reading lists.
She has been asked to join Zoom classroom lessons on the book.
“It’s been really fun, and the kids are learning right along with you,” Nancy Glen said. “It’s been a beautiful thing to have kids learn about their city and see your work used in a classroom.”
The sisters had anticipated selling the books in stores in March, but the coronavirus pandemic altered their plan. With bookstores closed, they couldn’t sell the book, so they offered an e-book version for free.
“I was really inspired by all the people giving all they had,” Nancy Glen said.
The book is at third-grade reading level and can be downloaded here for free until the end of June. There is an option to donate to the Puyallup Food Bank.
The sisters are working on two books about Olympia and Seattle. Nancy Glen said the characters in the Olympia book will learn about governance as senate pages.
