COVID causes Puyallup aerospace-manufacturing plant to shut down

A Puyallup plastics-manufacturing facility is expected to shut down at the end of June, due to the coronavirus’ impact on the aerospace industry.

Saint-Gobain, a French plastic company, said 96 employees will lose their jobs due to the June 30 closure.

The manufacturing plant opened on North Levee Road to create plastic parts primarily for the aerospace industry, according to an 2010 press release.

As the coronavirus’ impact on the aerospace industry continues to evolve, Saint-Gobain made the difficult but necessary decision to permanently close the manufacturing plant, said Dina Silver Pokedoff, the company’s director of branding and communication.

“We’re committed to working closely with all employees to mitigate the impacts of the plant closure and will be fully assisting with career counseling and identifying job opportunities at other Saint-Gobain plants, as well as those external to the Company,” she said in an email.

Operations moved from Seattle to the 109,000-square-foot facility in 2010.

There have been financial losses throughout the travel industry. With fewer people flying, Boeing announced May 28 that more than 12,000 jobs would be cut through layoffs and buyouts.
