COVID outbreak postpones Orting School District homecoming week
The Orting School District canceled its high school’s homecoming events scheduled for this week after a COVID-19 outbreak on the school’s football team, according to a note on the district’s website.
“All unvaccinated OHS Football Players will quarantine for the next 14 days,” the note said. “Those who were vaccinated or had a previous verified COVID-19 positive case within the past 90 days can attend school in person.”
The note didn’t say how many cases were involved in the outbreak.
All football practices and games are postponed until Oct. 19.
Homecoming events postponed to future dates include the volleyball tailgate, assembly, football game against Fife and the formal homecoming tailgate, according to the note.
“OHS Homecoming Week is one of the biggest celebrations for staff, students, families and community members, and leaders throughout the City of Orting,” the note said. “Our district leaders will immediately work on planning future dates of the Homecoming events.”
Since school began this fall, school districts in Pierce County have reported hundreds of COVID-19 cases, The News Tribune reported. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal said not to be surprised by that.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department keeps a running list of outbreaks that happen at local school districts and is divided by region. As of Sept. 30, there have been 3 outbreaks in East Pierce County.
