Pierce County park’s $165,000 upgrade includes basketball, tennis, pickleball courts
Residents in Milton will have new sport courts this summer.
The court at Milton Community Park at 15th Avenue and Milton Way will be closed until early June for renovations. There will be a new tennis court, two pickleball courts, a full-length basketball court and removable field hockey nets when the upgrades are done.
“It’s the most used park we have in our city,” Mayor Shanna Styron Sherrell said.
The sports court at the 10-acre park currently has a tennis court on one side and half of a basketball court on the other. Styron Sherrell said she is excited that there will be a full-length basketball court incorporated soon.
The pickleball courts are one feature some residents are excited about, Styron Sherrell said.
“Pickleball has become increasingly popular,” Styron Sherrell said.
Renovations will cost about $165,000. About $75,000 is from a state Recreation and Conservation Office grant while the rest will come from the city’s general fund.
Renovations will be done on the “existing footprint” of the sports court, Styron Sherrell said. The sports court will not be expanded. Other existing features in the park include a fuchsia garden, playground, picnic tables, public restrooms and two parking lots.
The sports court was built in the 1970s and has “reached the end” of its useful life, according to city documents. City staff have heard from residents that an upgrade is “past due.”
Plans to make upgrades to Milton Community Park and other parks started in 2019, Styron Sherrell said. So far, the city has made improvements to West Milton Park at 700 Kent Street as well as the playground at Milton Community Park.
