New Orleans, Hawaiian and Filipino cuisine are coming to this Pierce County block party

There’s part of Sumner that might fulfill your cravings next weekend if you’re looking for Asian cuisine, among other things.

The Sumner Main Street Association is hosting its inaugural block party from 12-6 p.m. on Saturday, June 18. The free event will occur in downtown Sumner near the Main Street and Ryan Avenue intersection.

“We want this event to really serve as an introduction to downtown Sumner,” said SMSA Executive Director Matt Loeb.

The event will feature 11 food trucks, Loeb said. The food trucks include Velvet’s Big Easy, Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max and Born-n-Braised. Velvet’s Big Easy is known for its gumbo as well as shrimp and grits. People go to Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max for its poke and other popular dishes from Hawaii. Born-n-Braised specializes in Filipino delicacies such as pancit and lumpia.

There will also be games such as cornhole, live music from local musician Jim Meck and a beer garden.

“You can really eat your way throughout the world when you come to Sumner,” Loeb said.

Plans for another block party are still to be determined because the SMSA wants to see the turnout for this event, Loeb said.

SMSA’s other upcoming events include Rhubarb Days and Vintage Market from July 9-10 and the Classy Chassis vintage car show Aug. 7.
