Initial post: A head-on wreck shut down both directions of Pioneer Way East Wednesday morning, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The wreck happened shortly after 11 a.m. in the 6300 block of Pioneer Way.

Emergency crews extracted both drivers from their vehicles and took them to the hospital, sheriff’s spokesperson Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. told The News Tribune. At least one driver was reported to have serious injuries, Moss said.

He said one vehicle was overturned and the other ended up in the ditch. Investigators are still determining what caused the crash. Moss said they found drugs in one of the vehicles, and that it wasn’t clear if that played any role in the wreck.

He hoped investigators would be able to reopen the road by about 3:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. Wednesday.
