A new part of this trail will take runners, walkers and bikers along the Puyallup River
An East Pierce County city plans to modify one of its trails.
The Puyallup City Council accepted a $1.65 million grant from the Puget Sound Regional Council during a council meeting March 21. This grant will help design and reconstruct part of the Riverwalk Trail.
The 5-mile trail hugs the Puyallup River, but there’s a portion that cuts through some residential streets. City spokesperson Eric Johnson said the goal is to continue the trail along the river.
The 1-mile “gap” starts from the Fifth Street Northeast and Eighth Avenue Northeast intersection, Johnson said. It ends near the Second Avenue Northeast and Ninth Street Northeast intersection.
Trail users coming from the Fifth Street Northeast and Eighth Avenue Northeast intersection need to walk south of Fifth Street and head east of Second Avenue Northeast to get to the other side of the trail.
“If you’re a runner, walker or a cyclist, you want to keep going along the river,” Johnson said. “This would connect that missing link.”
Johnson said the project is still in its preliminary stages. Construction is expected to occur in 2024-25.
