This busy East Pierce County road has a detour for four weeks. Here’s what to know
Crews are closing Canyon Road East to southbound drivers this month.
The Pierce County Planning and Public Works department posted on social media that there will be a southbound detour on Canyon Road East between 84th Street East and 72nd Street East as of Monday, June 12.
Southbound traffic will be rerouted to Woodland Avenue East and Waller Road East.
The detour will remain for about four weeks, according to the post. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. The detour will be removed outside of work hours.
Crews are working to improve that portion of Canyon Road East and to “enhance safety and relieve traffic congestion,” according to the post.
There are plans to expand a portion of the road to five lanes with a two-way left-turn lane, and to add sidewalks and street lighting, among other things, according to Pierce County’s website.
The total cost of the project is about $7.65 million and comes from the state transportation improvement board urban arterial program funds, federal surface transportation program funds, and local traffic impact fees.
