He robbed a well-known Puyallup-area corner store at gunpoint. Here is his sentence
A man who robbed a Puyallup-area corner store at gunpoint in 2022 has pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery, second-degree robbery, and second-degree taking a motor vehicle without permission.
Former Pierce County Superior Court Judge James Orlando, who was filling in temporarily, sentenced 26-year-old Emmanuel Roy Aydon to six years and five months in prison Aug. 23.
The News Tribune reported in July 2022 that Aydon was accused of robbing the Handy Corner Food Store April 15, 2022 at 8009 112th St. E. No one was injured.
Surveillance video showed a man pulling a silver handgun after entering the store, The News Tribune reported. The man pointed it toward a clerk at the register. The clerk threw about $200 in cash at the man, who left and entered a car waiting nearby.
Aydon was also accused of robbing a gas station convenience store on Golden Given Road in Midland about a week earlier, The News Tribune reported.
Tacoma Police Department officers arrested Aydon July 21, 2022 in a stolen truck, according to charging papers.
Part of Aydon’s sentence includes chemical dependency treatment.
Attorney Travis Currie, who represented Aydon, told The News Tribune it was a “tragic case.” Aydon luckily has support from his family and community, he said.
During a 2019 robbery at the Handy Corner store, someone shot and killed 79-year-old Soon Ja Nam, who co-owned the shop with her husband, The News Tribune reported. A 16-year-old prosecutors charged in the case was later convicted and sentenced.
