Crews demolished a day care building in downtown Sumner. Here’s what will replace it

A building that used to house a day care center in downtown Sumner is gone.

Sound Transit’s contractor finished demolishing the building at 725 Narrow St. last week. It used to be A Kid’s World.

Sound Transit purchased the property in 2018 for $340,000, according to the Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer’s website.

Sound Transit spokesperson David Jackson wrote in an email that the contractor demolished the building because it was within the footprint of Sumner Station’s upcoming parking garage and surface parking.

The new parking garage will have four and a half levels. The garage and new surface parking spaces will provide 500 additional parking spots at the station.

Jackson said the Sound Transit Board approved a $49 million contract for the project “plus contingencies not to exceed $59.9 million overall.”

Construction on the new garage is expected to begin by the end of this year. It’s expected to open in early 2026.
