Puyallup Police arrest 17-year-old student accused of bringing gun to high school

The Puyallup Police Department took a 17-year-old into custody Thursday after he allegedly brought a handgun to Puyallup High School.

The police department wrote at 8:55 p.m. Nov. 2 on social media that a student informed a high school security officer earlier that day about another student who had a handgun on school grounds. The high school summoned a school resource officer (SRO).

That officer and high school administration got a hold of the student and confirmed he had a handgun, according to the police department’s social media post. Police booked him into Remann Hall on suspicion of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a dangerous weapon on school grounds.

The police department’s social media post reads in part: “The SRO and school administration have investigated the incident and, at this point, do not believe that the student intended to cause harm. Therefore, we do not have any further concerns regarding student or staff safety at this time.”

School district spokesperson Sarah Gillispie wrote in an email that the high school has expelled the student for no less than 365 days.

“There is zero tolerance for weapons of any kind on campus. Prevention and intervention is the district’s focus to prevent future incidents like these,” Gillispie said.

The school district has an anonymous reporting system online at: puyallupsd.org/about-us/departments/communications/report-it.

A spokesperson for the Puyallup Police Department wasn’t immediately available for comment.
