Pets perish in East Pierce County fires. The cause of the blazes is under investigation

East Pierce firefighters saved two dogs and a horse after they extinguished two residential fires Monday, Jan. 8, near the city of Buckley.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to a “fully-involved” barn fire shortly before 6 p.m. Jan. 8, near the 25000 block of 157th Street East, the fire department posted at 8:36 p.m. that night on social media.

Crews stopped the fire before it spread to a nearby carport, according to the fire department’s social media post.

Two dogs and rabbits died in the fire. Crews transported a dog with serious injuries to a veterinarian. A horse survived. The cause of the fire was still under investigation, according to the fire department’s social media post.

Earlier that day firefighters battled a “stubborn” fire around 12:45 p.m. near the 7800 block of 228th Avenue Court East, the fire department posted at 8:05 p.m. that night on social media.

No one was home when the fire happened. One cat died and another cat was missing. A dog survived. The cause of the fire was also still under investigation, according to the fire department’s social media post.

East Pierce Fire spokesperson Dina Sutherland said Tuesday, Jan. 9, that she had no other information to add other than what was posted on social media.
