New electric vehicle charging station opens for drivers on SR 167, SR 410 and in Sumner
There is a new electric vehicle charging station in East Pierce County.
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) opened a charging station at The Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse at 13608 Cannery Way in Sumner. There was a ribbon-cutting event Thursday. This is PSE’s first public charging station in Pierce County, according to a news release.
The charging station has two DC fast-charging ports and two Level 2 charging ports, according to the news release. It is always open for residents and visitors. Drivers do not have to be PSE customers to use it.
“We see it as a valuable addition to drivers traveling along [state routes] 167 and 410, visitors to ... businesses within Sumner and even those living within the city without charging at home,” PSE spokesperson Gerald Tracy wrote in an email.
Tracy said PSE invested over $500,000 in the charging station.
“We’re committed to carbon reduction and supporting the growth of electric transportation in our region,” Tracy said. “One way we’re doing that is by making it easier for drivers to charge their EVs at home, at work and in public through our Up & Go Electric charging stations. This enables market transformation for transportation electrification.”
PSE plans to open at least two more public charging stations across its service area, according to the news release. The Sumner charging station is the sixth one. The first charging station opened in September 2020 in Lacey. Others are in Kent, Olympia, Bellingham and Anacortes.
A charging station in Bremerton is expected to open soon. A location for an eighth charging facility has not yet been chosen.
PSE covers up to 100 percent of installation costs for businesses and organizations interested in having a public charging station. More information on the Up & Go Electric for Public program can be found at pse.com/en/pages/electric-cars/Public-Charging.
