Busy Pierce County park is getting a new playground with swings for kids and caregivers
Bonney Lake residents will gain a new playground soon. It’ll be ADA-accessible.
Field 5 at Allan Yorke Park will get some swings, slides and a seesaw, among other things. The playground will be next to an existing multi-sport turf field at 7203 West Tapps Hwy. Restrooms and a water fountain are already onsite.
The playground will have a ramp that can help children who use mobility devices, Lindsey Erwin of Great Western Recreation wrote in an email.
The playground will also have a RoxAll SeeSaw with seats that easily transfer children onto the ride. Expression swings will allow a caretaker and child to swing together, Erwin said.
It will cost about $227,709 to install the playground, city administrator assistant Leslie Harris wrote in an email. Both the city and state are funding the project. She said the playground might be installed sometime in the fall.
Harris said this will be the first ADA-accessible playground in the city.
“It provides more play opportunities,” she said.
There has been a push to build more inclusive playgrounds in other places in Pierce County, too, including University Place.
The News Tribune reported recently about a groundbreaking ceremony for an inclusive playground April 12 at Cirque Park in University Place. The playground is expected to have a grand opening in early fall.
Edgewood Community Park at 10301 36th St. E. had an opening ceremony about two years ago. The park has a basket swing and a ramp. The News Tribune reported about the project in March 2022.
