Crews will close entrance to popular Pierce County park to do work there this month
Part of Swan Creek Park will close this month while crews remove gravel from a nearby sediment pond.
The pond is northeast of the park near Pioneer Way East and Waller Road East.
The northeast side will be closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 17-18, 20-21 and 24-28, according to Pierce County’s website.
The parking lot in the northeast area will be closed during work hours. A portion of a trail that leads to the sediment pond will also be closed during work hours.
Crews will place closure signs in the area during work hours.
The sediment pond helps reduce flooding during high-water events. Pierce County removes gravel from the pond every one to three years. Some of the gravel collected will be used for future pond maintenance work and other habitat enhancement projects, according to the website.
Anne Radford, Pierce County public information specialist, wrote in an email that this task could cost between $150,000 to $200,000, depending on the amount of gravel removed, stockpiled and hauled off-site.
