Traffic alert: Crews to close busy Pierce County bridge for maintenance work

A heavily trafficked bridge outside Puyallup will be closed Tuesday.

Crews will close the Milroy Bridge from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 25 for routine maintenance work. Motorists must use an alternate route.

Anne Radford, Pierce County public information specialist, wrote in an email to The News Tribune that motorists may see increased traffic on nearby roads, including River Road East. Motorists should add extra travel time to get to their destination, she said.

The bridge between River Road East and North Levee Road East has a concrete deck that crews will seal to keep moisture out and prevent cracking or deterioration, according to a news release from Pierce County.

Crews will also do other maintenance work such as paint touch-ups, vegetation removal and repairs to wood planks if needed, according to the news release.

The steel truss bridge was built in 1931. About 12,000 vehicles use it per day, according to the news release.

Asked about how much the maintenance work will cost, Radford said the county could not prepare a cost estimate by the end of the day Friday to meet The News Tribune’s deadline.
