Drones, spike strips, K-9 help search for suspect in Puyallup near Shaw Road, police say
Spike strips, drones and a K-9 helped search for a suspect driving a stolen vehicle Monday night in Puyallup, according to police.
Puyallup Police Captain Kevin Gill told The News Tribune that an officer identified a stolen vehicle near the South Hill Mall around 6 p.m.
The driver headed down the hill. Police didn’t pursue because they were worried about a chase ensuing near the Washington State Fair. It’s the last week of the fair, during which the area sees heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
“We didn’t want to end up having a car drive through the traffic at the fair,” Gill said.
Instead, Gill said the driver turned onto 23rd Avenue Southeast part way down the hill.
Officers set out spike strips near 23rd and Shaw Road East. That stopped the vehicle, which officers found in the Forest Green neighborhood nearby.
They used drones and a K-9 to try to find the driver.
“Ultimately, they weren’t able to locate them,” Gill said.
Gill said investigators have some leads but that they haven’t identified a suspect.
Residents posted on social media, wondering what had happened. Some of the comments on those posts suggested that the suspect fired a gun.
Gill said no firearms were involved and that no one was hurt.
