138 apartments planned for downtown Puyallup parking lot. Here’s what we know so far
Downtown Puyallup might see over 100 new apartments in the near future.
City council documents say the city has found a potential developer for the 1-acre parcel of land at 330 Third St. SW, where the city’s former administrative office building was. The developer — Urban Olympia — is working with city staff to plan a mixed-use building with 138 apartments that would be market-rate.
The council will hear a presentation about the proposed project from city staff and Urban Olympia at the council meeting March 11. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers on the fifth floor of City Hall at 333 S. Meridian.
“The units would be a mix of studios, 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom apartments,” the agenda documents for the March 11 council meeting say. “In addition, there would be approximately 2,500 square feet of ground-floor retail/commercial space.”
Urban Olympia has previously designed and built mixed-use projects in downtown Olympia, the documents say. They would pay the city $1.9 million for the land and be required to do approximately $295,000 in roadway and parking improvements on the block. Those improvements would include 29 public parking stalls, a new curb, gutter and sidewalk, resurfacing the roadway and new ramps under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“In exchange for these public benefits, Urban Olympia is seeking some modifications to development standards regarding parking requirements, internal drive aisle dimensions, zone transition buffers, and setbacks,” the council documents say.
20 of the 29 parking stalls would be designated for those who visit the Puyallup senior center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
In 2023, a previous developer — the McBride-Cohen Management Group — dropped out of its plans to build a four-story building with 66 luxury condominiums on the site. They told The News Tribune at the time that it was due to a mix of economic conditions and problems with the land including soil, stormwater, parking and design requirements.
