Man killed in Pierce County crash as he fled hit-and-run, Sheriff’s Office says

A 26-year-old man is dead after he lost control of his car while trying to flee from a hit-and-run near Lake Tapps, according to investigators.

According to a news release from the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, the wreck happened Tuesday night at about 9 p.m. in the 2100 block of 214th Ave. E.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the man’s name.

“The at fault driver (26 year old male deceased) had just committed an unrelated hit and run north of this location and was fleeing the scene southbound on 214th Avenue East,” the release said. “The driver lost control of his vehicle on a curve and slid sideways into the oncoming lane of travel, where he was struck by a northbound vehicle.”

The crash caused the man to be ejected from his vehicle, the release said, and his vehicle “sustained heavy damage.”

“The other 43-year-old male driver was conscious and talking and was transported to the hospital,” the release said. “Traffic responded to [the] scene for the investigation and 214th Avenue was shut down for several hours for the investigation.”

Carly Cappetto, spokesperson for the PCSO, told The News Tribune that it’s not clear whether the 26-year-old was intoxicated at the time of the wreck. Investigators are waiting for toxicology reports to come back.
