‘Aggressive behavior’ on school playground in Puyallup prompts modified lockdown

Staff placed Dessie Evans Elementary School in Puyallup under modified lockdown Thursday due to an incident on the playground.

Sarah Gillispie, spokesperson for the Puyallup School District, told The News Tribune the school was under lockdown for about 18 minutes because of “a student on the playground exhibiting aggressive behavior.”

No one was hurt, she said. The incident happened at about 3 p.m.

Gillispie said a modified lockdown happens when staff lock the external doors of a school, but operations resume normally inside.

“[It] didn’t involve any weapons, police were not involved,” Gillispie said. “... In these types of situations when staff members are trying to get them under control, they will put the school into a modified lockdown so that they are able to focus on that particular student.”

The News Tribune asked Gillispie what aggressive behavior the student was exhibiting, and what happened to the student afterward. Gillispie said she did not have that information.

Gillispie emphasized the lockdown was a “precautionary measure” and has since been lifted.
