Puyallup service clubs donate $114,000 annually to Puyallup-area students

Service clubs in Puyallup have donated approximately $114,000 this past year in support of the students in our community.

The Service Clubs of Puyallup, an organization of the leaders of the Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions, Altrusa Clubs and the Corinthian Masonic Lodge have been meeting on a regular basis for almost a year.

The purpose of these meetings, according to Curtis Thiel, assistant district governor of Rotary International and past president of the South Hill Rotary, is to coordinate the community activities of the various service clubs in Puyallup and to jointly support our community.

Puyallup Rotary Club has donated about $77,000 for the Youth Round Table. All clubs and the Masonic Lodge, a fraternal organization, give scholarships.

Corinthian Masonic Lodge annually gives out about $5,850 in scholarships; the Puyallup Valley Lions give $4,000, as do the Puyallup Lions Club, and Puyallup South Hill Rotary gives $14,000. The Daffodil Valley Kiwanis Club and the Puyallup Altrusa Club both award $2,000 in scholarships. Additionally, the clubs provide funds for various school clubs and projects.

The Lions Clubs also annually screen more than 500 children at Special Olympics and at Cascade Christian Schools for sight and hearing. And, Puyallup Lions participates with Lions International in collecting used eyeglasses and used hearing aids for distribution.

Service Clubs of Puyallup’s next community-wide project is an All Service Clubs Garage Sale on July 16 at the South Hill Mall.

John Adamson is part of the Service Clubs of Puyallup. This is the first installment of a monthly column highlighting Puyallup service clubs and their contributions to the community.
