Puyallup: Sumner

Dirty Oscar’s heads to Sumner to offer commuters quick breakfasts or an after-work beer

Commuters from Sumner soon can look forward to a warm breakfast or a beer to bookend their workdays.

Dirty Oscar’s Annex is expected to open a coffee shop next to the Sumner light rail station by late March or early April, executive chef Tasso Zambaras told The Herald.

The business, Annex 253 Coffee Shop and Catering, will offer on-the-go breakfast options and coffee for those heading into work and appetizers and beer during after-work hours.

The Tacoma-based restaurant began searching for a building so it could expand into the catering business, Zambaras said. When it came across the former Midtown Station building, plans shifted into a coffee shop front and a catering business run from the back.

They bought the property in September.

Located at 813 Academy St., the coffee shop will not offer the same menu as the Tacoma restaurant but rather “Dirty Oscar’s-inspired” fare. The executive chef said the restaurant will morph into what customers want.

“We don’t want to pigeon-hole it as a new restaurant and realize there isn’t a demand,” Zambaras said. “We will consider breakfasts on Saturday, or whatever, if that’s the need.”

Dirty Oscar’s also is looking to expand to other cities, like Portland. The restaurant has become a staple in Tacoma.

“It’s like a cult following, almost,” he said. “It’s a close-knit community, and we are excited to join.”
