Commuters beware: Traffic Avenue, part of Route 410 to close near Sumner for construction
Sumner is expected to see a full closure of the Traffic Avenue bridge and the portion of state Route 410 that travels under it on March 20.
The closure will begin at 8 p.m. on Traffic Avenue — including the bridge — and 9 p.m. for state Route 410.
The roads will be shut down until 7 a.m. March 21. The closure resumes that evening. The roads will reopen permanently March 22 at 9 a.m.
Here are the planned detours:
▪ State Route 167 or state Route 512 drivers going east on state Route 410 will detour using East Main, Shaw Road, Pioneer and state Route 162.
▪ Those coming from Bonney Lake or Tehaleh, heading to Sumner by state Route 167 or state Route 512, will need to use Valley Avenue and the Traffic Avenue on-ramp to westbound state Route 410.
▪ Drivers coming from Puyallup will have to use East Main, Shaw Road, Pioneer and state Route 162.
The detour are expected to be congested, Sumner Mayor Bill Pugh said in a letter to residents.
During the closures, seven concrete beams will be brought in from Tacoma and set in place by two cranes. The lane closures allow crews to install the beams for the new Traffic Avenue bridge being built alongside the old one.
“For safety reasons, this work cannot take place over live traffic,” Pugh said.
Construction on Traffic Avenue started in September to expand the bridge for increasing traffic passing through the city.
At peak hours, commutes are expected to be cut by 7.5 minutes, Leach said.
The current bridge would carry traffic going to Puyallup while the new bridge would bring in commuters to Sumner.
