This East Pierce County housing development will have 105 apartments, townhomes for rent
When springtime comes around and you’re taking a stroll or drive along Main Street East in Sumner, expect to see some construction work happening near 160th Avenue East. The city is about to get a new housing complex.
The Nemeth Mixed-Use Development Planned Action project will bring seven buildings to the open area east of Aversano’s Italian Restaurant at 6015 Parker Rd. E. There will be a total of 105 apartments, and the buildings will be between one to three stories high.
City communications coordinator Joseph McKinney said of the 105 units for rent, 84 will be one- and two-bedroom apartments, and the remaining 21 will be two-bedroom townhomes. About 200 parking stalls will be provided for residents and guests.
The developer — Ronhovde Architects LLC — is also planning to build commercial spaces near the apartment complexes to offer residents shopping opportunities, but plans have not been finalized yet, McKinney said.
City communications director Carmen Palmer said the Nemeth project is one of the many projects that are a part of the East Sumner Neighborhood Plan. The plan is a “vision” that promotes development and growth on the east side of the city, she said. Palmer said the city is beginning to receive more applications from developers.
“Nemeth is one of the first for East Sumner,” Palmer said. “There’s more coming.”
Palmer said the Nemeth housing will be market rate.
“The more housing you have the more affordable it is for everyone. The less housing you have the less affordable it is for everyone,” Palmer said.
Sumner has a population of about 10,000 people with most living in single-family homes, according to the city’s housing action plan. By 2040, the city is expecting about 12,473 residents.
Construction is expected to begin in spring 2022, McKinney said. The completion date has not been determined yet.
