Driver, 76, crashes into side of East Pierce County coffee shop. Here’s what happened
A driver crashed into the side of a popular cafe Wednesday, April 12, that serves coffee and crepes in Sumner.
The car hit the side of the building that houses Craft.19 Espresso + Creperie at 1201 Main St. around 4 p.m. No one was injured.
The driver was a 76-year-old Sumner resident. There was no one else in the car.
The driver was traveling in a 2021 GMC Terrain SUV rental car on Main Street. Police said the driver accidentally hit the accelerator when turning left on Ryan Avenue. The driver got up on the curb, drove onto the sidewalk and struck the side of the shop.
The vehicle hit a water pipe inside the wall, causing water damage inside the shop. Water was leaking inside and some flooding happened. Craft.19 owner Waldo Dagan said he doesn’t know the cost of the damages yet.
Dagan said he was in the building with his staff when the car hit the wall outside. He said they heard a “big bang.”
“We later found out that … it seems like she didn’t know how to drive this newer car because it’s all digital and all that,” Dagan said.
The shop will be closed until further notice, Dagan said. Patrons should expect updates on social media.
