Driver crashes into Pierce County restaurant after suffering medical condition

A woman in her 60s with a medical condition crashed into Oxbow Urban Kitchen in Sumner last week, city spokesperson Carmen Palmer told The News Tribune Monday.

The wreck happened at 12:58 a.m. on Friday, Palmer said.

The woman lost control of her Honda sedan and drove into Oxbow’s main entrance, according to Rebecca Haff, the restaurant’s manager. The crash happened after Haff closed the restaurant for the night and went home. The driver wasn’t injured, Haff said.

The restaurant was closed all day Friday and until 2 p.m. on Saturday due to the damage.

One of the restaurant’s owners, Alex Anton, said he was called to the scene shortly after the wreck. For now, the restaurant has a temporary wooden door at the entrance. Reconstructing the entrance could take at least a month, Anton said. He said the driver is fully insured.

Oxbow’s hours of operation are back to normal as listed on the restaurant’s website.

“Our entrance may look a little different, but you can come and join us for the same great food, drinks, service and atmosphere,” according to the company’s Facebook post on June 21.

The restaurant’s Oxbow Barrel Reserve event was postponed from June 21 to July 5 due to the accident, according to the website.
