Bridging Puyallup and Sumner together at holiday festival
For 17 years, The Old Cannery has carried the tradition in Sumner when it comes to holiday events.
This year the events will continue as part of its 18th annual Bridge Lighting and Festival Celebration.
The Old Cannery, which has partnered with Sunset Chevrolet and Columbia Bank, will welcome in the holiday season by adorning the Stuck River Bridge with more than 10,000 white Christmas lights and a fireworks show. In years past, the event has brought in an estimated 5,000 people.
“We love it,” said Jackie Walls, the Cannery’s event coordinator. “It’s a great way to give back to the community. Our customers and community made us, so it’s our way to give back. The theme of our store is to do what’s right. It’s not about making money. ”
Begining at 2 p.m. Friday (Nov. 27), vendors from Puyallup and Sumner will sell their handmade crafts, and the Puyallup Sumner Chamber of Commerce will have a photo booth.
Walls says the bridge lighting event is really a celebration that brings the community together.
“We will have the Harmony Kings, a DJ that plays music, the Puyallup ActivStars Cheerleading team, and Act 1 theater performing toy soldiers,” she said. “It’s truly a community event, and I love that.”
At 4 p.m., cider is served, as is cocoa and roasting nuts, before Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow speaks before the bridge lights up at 5 p.m.
In addition the Bridge Lighting Festival, The Old Cannery will also host Santa from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning Friday (Nov. 27). After that, Santa will be at The Old Cannery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 20 for complimentary photos.
“We have a fabulous Santa,” Walls said. “He takes the time to actually listen to the kids. He’s flexible and works with different needs.”
The Stuck River Bridge closes at 4:30 p.m., so Walls encourages attendees to plan ahead for which side of the bridge to park on.
