Hanging baskets strung on the street lights lining Main Street bring a pop of color to downtown Sumner each spring through fall.

As a thank-you to the city of Sumner, the Sumner Downtown Association is selling hanging baskets as a fundraiser to help purchase larger hanging baskets for Main Street.

“It’s a good partnership with the city,” SDA executive director Kevin Caviezel said. “We like to help each other out for a better downtown.”

Not only is the SDA helping offset the cost to the city, the organization is also helping support a local business, Windmill Gardens, which supplies the hanging baskets for both the fundraiser and the baskets that will be hung downtown.

In previous years, Caviezel says as many as 80 to 90 baskets were sold, and he hopes to beat that number this year.

“Our goal is to make as much as we can (selling hanging baskets),” he said. “We want to help offset the cost to the city. The baskets look great, and help beautify downtown. It shows community pride and downtown continuity.”

Without the SDA’s help, the cost to purchase the hanging baskets would be more than $2,000, Caviezel said.

The cost of a basket is $35 for SDA members and $40 for non members.

“It adds even more to the downtown,” said SDA administrative assistant Edie Aydlott. “It brings a lot of color in the summer.”

The hanging baskets are being sold now through May 6. To order a basket, call 253-891-4260.
