Three children were hurt when their mother drove drunk and crashed their SUV in University Place over the summer, according to charging papers.
The 25-year-old woman was charged with vehicular assault Monday for the July 17 wreck, which happened in the 7000 block of Cirque Drive West.
Her arraignment is scheduled for next month.
Court records give this account of what happened:
The Ford Explorer crashed into a couple trees, a light pole and rolled, landing upside down.
Crews took the driver and her three children, a 4-year-old and 1-year-old twins, to local hospitals. Bystanders helped get the kids out of the wreckage.
The mother told a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy that she’d had about four beers, and tests showed her blood-alcohol level was 0.19 at the scene, and 0.13 at the hospital — above the legal limit of 0.08.
When the deputy checked on the children at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, staff members were planning to send one of the babies to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He had severe cuts to his face, and glass shards in one of his eyelids. His twin had a scraped forehead and small cut on his scalp. Their older sister suffered an abrasion to her abdomen.
They were released from the hospital to their grandmother.
