DuPont man, 82, dies of injuries from wrong-way crash that killed wife

An 82-year-old DuPont man has died of injuries sustained in a wrong-way crash that killed his wife a week ago.

Albert Owings died at a local hospital Wednesday.

His wife, 69-year-old Berdie Owings, was killed Nov. 2 when a driver traveling the wrong direction on Interstate 5 struck the couple’s Suzuki Aerio station wagon head-on.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes near the DuPont-Steilacoom Road off-ramp.

Troopers said a 46-year-old Federal Way woman was lost and got on the off-ramp in a Chevrolet Equinox heading the wrong way.

Albert Owings tried to veer out of the way, but the other driver swerved in the same direction and they collided.

The other driver has not been charged with a crime but could face a charge of second-degree negligent driving, officials said.
