1 dead, 1 arrested after Spanaway crash, deputies say

One person was killed and another was injured in a crash Sunday night in Spanaway, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash happened about 9:15 p.m. in the 16600 block of Spanaway Loop Road, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Monday afternoon, where the road turns around the southwest corner of Spanaway Lake.

A 23-year-old Lakewood man driving a white sedan northbound on the road crossed the center line and struck an SUV going the other direction, Troyer said.

A 27-year-old Spanaway man in the car was taken to a Tacoma hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Deputies believe the 23-year-old was drunk at the time of the crash, Troyer said, but toxicology results are pending. The man was placed under arrest, but he remains hospitalized for his own injuries.

The driver of the SUV was uninjured.
