He rear-ended a car in Sumner and paid cash to fix it. Then he got shot at in Lakewood, charging papers say
A man who rear-ended a car in Sumner agreed to pay cash to fix the damage but later was shot at in Lakewood following a discrepancy about what it should cost, charging papers allege.
The 30-year-old suspect in the shooting pleaded not guilty at arraignment Friday to first-degree robbery, drive-by shooting, second-degree assault and unlawful gun possession.
His bail was set at $1 million.
Charging papers give this account of what happened:
A man driving an SUV rear-ended another vehicle in Sumner about 1 p.m. Nov. 18.
The other driver said she did not want to call police. She called her husband and then two men arrived.
The SUV driver agreed to pay cash to fix the woman’s car, and everyone went to a repair shop in Lakewood to get an estimate. One of the men rode with the SUV driver.
They learned the damage would cost about $750 to fix.
The SUV driver and his passenger went to a bank.
The passenger said he wanted the SUV driver to pay $1,000.
The driver offered $800. He took out $900, and, when he got out of the bank, the passenger was in the back seat of the woman’s car.
The passenger demanded all the money.
“When the victim did not hand over the additional $100, the defendant produced a black handgun and demanded the additional $100,” the declaration for determination of probable cause says. “The victim handed it over and backed off.”
The SUV driver recorded the conversation, during which the passenger says: “I’m not (expletive) playing with you. Give me that money, bro! You just hit a pregnant woman.”
The woman’s car drove off, and the SUV driver followed.
That’s when the woman’s car did a U-turn back toward the SUV, and the passenger fired at the SUV as the vehicles passed.
The shots didn’t hit the driver or the SUV.
A bullet did go through the window of an apartment in the area.
Detectives identified the suspect and arrested him.
