Pierce County deputy shoots, wounds man who rammed patrol vehicles during chase
An armed man who pointed a gun at Pierce County deputies and rammed several patrol cars during a pursuit in Graham Sunday was shot and injured, according to the department.
The incident started about 6:30 p.m. when deputies were called to the suspect’s mother’s home on a domestic violence call.
“He pointed a gun at our deputies,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
One deputy fired a round.
The 49-year-old suspect stole his mom’s car and fled, ramming a patrol car and initiating a pursuit.
During the chase, one patrol car was forced into a tree and two deputies were injured.
On 70th Avenue near Mathias Road and 236th Street, the suspect allegedly got out of his vehicle and put a gun to his head.
The roadway was shut down and a SWAT team was called out.
The suspect got back in his car and drove in reverse, again initiating a 60-mph chase with deputies as he tried to flee with flattened tires.
They forced his vehicle to crash into a ditch using a maneuver, and the suspect struck more patrol cars, Troyer said.
Another deputy fired a round near 8th Avenue and Mountain Highway East, hitting and wounding the man.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
No deputies were injured during the incident.
Tacoma police are investigating the shooting.
