Carjacking suspect in custody after fleeing deputy in Graham, holding 91-year-old hostage
A carjacking suspect fled a deputy and held a 91-year-old homeowner at gunpoint Monday, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department said.
Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said about 1 p.m. the homeowner had been safely removed from the residence, and that he was not injured.
The 30-year-old suspect remained barricaded inside and surrendered about 2:30 p.m.
SWAT and crisis negotiators were at the scene.
A loud sound heard in the area was a noise distraction device, used in an attempt to get the suspect’s attention, Troyer said.
According to the Sheriff’s Department:
He’s suspected of an armed carjacking about 10 a.m. Monday of a red Ford Taurus at a home on 245th Street East in Graham.
Minutes later a deputy saw the car and chased it. The suspect ended up turning onto a dirt road and took off on foot.
He went through woods, across a field and into a home near 82nd Avenue East and 224th Street East, which is where he forced the homeowner to the floor at gunpoint.
The 91-year-old was able to escape, and the Sheriff’s Department shutdown roads nearby as deputies responded.
North Star Elementary School nearby was briefly on lockdown.
