Deputy shot reckless driver who tried to run him down in Spanaway

A deputy fired several shots at a reckless driver in Spanaway early Thursday after the driver tried to run down the deputy, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident occurred just before 3 a.m. at Military Road South and Pacific Avenue South.

It was then a deputy spotted a 2016 Kia Forte being driven recklessly and tried to pull it over, but the driver sped away.

The deputy used a pursuit intervention technique to slow the car down.

“The car left the roadway, came back on and tried to run our deputy down,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. “Our deputy fired shots at the car.”

A few rounds are believed to have struck the Kia, but the driver was not seriously injured in the shooting.

The vehicle again left the roadway and hit a wire on a telephone pole, flipping upside down.

The suspect then fled on foot but was found by a K-9 team.

The 26-year-old Spanaway man was taken into custody. He will be booked into Pierce County Jail after being treated at an area hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg.

He had felony warrants out for his arrest, Troyer said.

Military Road South east of Pacific Avenue South was shut down for the investigation until 7:45 a.m.

The deputy involved will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
