South Hill man stabs father with kitchen knife after hearing voices, records say

A South Hill man stabbed his 84-year-old father with a kitchen knife after hearing voices telling him to do so, according to court documents.

The attack occurred Monday at the family’s home in the 9200 block of 159th Place East.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies were called to the house for a domestic disturbance and found the suspect’s mother frantically waving them down in the front yard.

She directed them to the kitchen, where her husband was holding down their son.

The 35-year-old son allegedly suffered from mental illness induced by alcohol and told his father “... voices were telling him to kill” his dad, charging papers say.

He grabbed an 8-inch kitchen knife and slashed his father’s throat, then stabbed him in the stomach, records say.

The man’s mother hit him over the head with a piece of wood then ran to a neighbor’s house to call for help.

Her husband was able to hold their son down until deputies arrived to take him into custody.

On Tuesday, prosecutors charged the son with first-degree assault.

He was ordered held at Pierce County Jail without bail and is awaiting a mental health evaluation.

The father’s condition was not immediately available.
