A man talking on his cellphone while sitting in his car was kidnapped and robbed by two armed men, Puyallup police reported.

The victims wasn’t hurt.

The incident occurred Feb. 27. Police said the man was in his car in the driveway outside his home about 1 a.m. when the two masked men got in, pointed pistols at him and demanded money.

He told them he had none and dissuaded them from entering his house, telling them there were large men and a dog inside, according to a news release.

The suspects forced him to drive to ATMs in Lakewood to withdraw money. The victim is from Hong Kong and convinced the suspects his Chinese debit card wasn’t working, police said.

The gunmen then made him call people he knows to ask to borrow money. One person agreed to meet the man at a motel, where he escaped, police said. The gunmen fled in his car.

“The vehicle was later recovered near the victim’s home in Puyallup, which leads detectives to believe the suspects had their own vehicle nearby when they chose this victim,” according to the news release. “The suspects talked of robbing other subjects they encountered while driving around with the victim, and even made two unsuccessful attempts.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Puyallup Police Department tip line at 253-770-3343 or email tips@ci.puyallup.wa.us.
