2 killed after car plunges off Tacoma overpass have been identified

Drugs or alcohol played a role in why a car plunged off a Pacific Avenue bridge in Tacoma and killed two people inside the vehicle, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Killed was driver James Pearson, 45, and passenger Lashonda Burgess, 50, of Federal Way.

A third person inside the vehicle, a 27-year-old Federal Way woman, was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in serious condition.

She was the only one wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

The three were traveling north on Pacific Avenue near 32nd Street South when Pearson lost control of the car.

About 7 p.m. Wednesday, the 2007 Ford Focus went through a fence on the west side of the street and plunged off the overpass.

It landed on its top on a grassy median in the Interstate 5 and Interstate 705/state Route 7 interchange.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
