Tacoma Police Department

Two people were killed Friday night after their vehicle slammed into a sign in Tacoma, police said.

The crash occurred just after 7 p.m. in the 3600 block of South 74th Street.

The male driver and female front seat passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

They have not been identified.

A man in the backseat had to be extricated. He was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police believe speed caused the crash.

South 74th Street between South Tacoma Way and South Tyler Street were shut down for more than five hours during the investigation.
