He fatally shot his friend when asked to move out of a Tacoma apartment, records say

A man suspected of fatally shooting a friend who occasionally let him crash at a Tacoma apartment was arrested late Thursday.

Emilio Calvillo, 27, is charged with second-degree murder in the May 8 death of Nelvin Tucker, 51.

He is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon.

A warrant was issued Monday and made public Thursday, just hours before Calvillo was taken into custody.

Charging papers give this account:

About 1:20 a.m. May 8, two people who live in the Scenic Pines apartments heard a loud popping noise and looked out their peephole to see what was going on.

They spotted Calvillo leaving Tucker’s apartment, his left hand tucked into a hooded sweatshirt.

After glancing around, Calvillo then took off running.

The witnesses tried calling Tucker and knocking on his door, but there was no immediate answer.

After several moments, Tucker managed to open his front door and then collapsed on the ground.

The witnesses called 911.

Before police or paramedics arrived at the apartment complex at 5102 S. 58th St., Tucker allegedly said Calvillo’s name and asked his neighbors to call his daughter.

Tucker was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where he died of a gunshot wound.

The victim’s daughter said she was at her father’s apartment earlier that night and Calvillo was playing his music loudly.

Tucker scolded Calvillo for being disrespectful and asked him to return his apartment keys and leave, records say.

Hours later, Tucker was shot.

Other witnesses recalled the victim asking Calvillo to move out recently.

A day or so before the homicide, a neighbor heard Tucker “tell the defendant to leave and not come back, then heard the defendant say something about shooting Tucker,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.

The victim’s daughter called Calvillo after hearing her dad was shot and he allegedly told her he heard gunshots as he was leaving.

He refused to tell her where he was and did not answer her repeated calls after that.
