Inmate dies at Pierce County Jail

A 43-year-old woman died inside the Pierce County Jail on Monday.

Since drugs were found on her when she was arrested, the woman was sent to the hospital to be checked out.

The hospital cleared her to be booked, and she was being kept in a high-risk holding cell, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

“We were following the protocols for detox,” sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The woman was found in her cell about 9:30 a.m. Monday and pronounced dead shortly afterward.

A cause of death will be determined by the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.

She was arrested Saturday on suspicion of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, first-degree criminal trespass, fourth-degree assault, driving on a suspended license, driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle without an ignition interlock device.
