2 teenagers killed when car struck embankment, tree in Waller area are identified

Two teenagers killed last week when their vehicle rolled over in the Waller area have been identified.

Hunter Brewer, 19, of Spanaway, was driving a Honda Civic east on 72nd Street East when he lost control at a curve, slid across the shoulder and hit an embankment. The car then rolled several times before striking a tree, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Brewer and passenger Haley Cummings, 19, of Tacoma, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said they saw the Honda twice before the crash, which occurred about 2:45 a.m. Thursday.

The first time was on 95th Street in Tacoma; the second was on Golden Given Road.

In both instances, the car was traveling more than 100 mph, according to the Sheriff’s Department. The car’s lights were off when it was spotted the second time.

Deputies said they did not pull the vehicle over because it was going too fast.
