1 killed in Spanaway after racing cars hit pickup truck, cause rollover crash

A 58-year-old Puyallup man was killed Wednesday after one of two cars racing in Spanaway struck his pickup truck, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The collision occurred just before 1 p.m. near state Route 7 and 174th Street South.

Two cars were “traveling recklessly” eastbound on 174th Street when a 17-year-old boy sped past the other vehicle, ran a stop sign and struck a pickup truck heading north on SR 7, trooper Ryan Burke said.

Both the car and the pickup truck rolled about 100 feet.

The truck’s driver died was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not yet been identified.

Both the teen boy and a 16-year-old female passenger were taken to St. Joseph Medical Center with unknown injuries.

The other driver who was racing, a 27-year-old Spanaway man, fled the scene in a Honda but was found shortly afterward and arrested.

Both drivers are expected to be booked in Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has cell phone or dashboard camera footage of the collision is asked to call the State Patrol at 253-538-3240.
