Tacoma police shoot, injure man after he opened fire on officers
Tacoma police shot and injured a man who opened fire on three officers Wednesday, according to the Pierce County Force Investigation Team.
The incident started about 7 a.m. after several people called 911 to report gunshots and a man and woman screaming on South D Street.
Witnesses reported that a vehicle left the scene, and an armed man was outside a home in the 4000 block of South D Street.
Officers arrived in two minutes and exchanged gunfire with the man, investigators said.
The man was struck by at least one bullet and taken to an area hospital.
None of the three officers who shot at the man was injured. All three were placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure after a police shooting.
Shortly afterward, detectives discovered that the vehicle seen speeding away from the initial shooting dropped off a shooting victim at the hospital.
That victim is reported to be in stable condition.
Both the shooting and the police shooting will be investigated by the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, which is comprised of personnel from multiple local law enforcement agencies.
This is the team’s first police shooting investigation since it formed. It will investigate all police-involved deaths in Pierce County from now on.
