Man pleads guilty to second-degree manslaughter, assault for shooting at Lakewood home
A man who fatally shot one person and injured another by shooting him the chest at a home in Lakewood last year has been sentenced.
Jovan Antwann Wade, 39, pleaded guilty in Pierce County Superior Court to second-degree manslaughter Thursday for the death of Christopher Allen. Wade also pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree assault.
Judge Jack Nevin sentenced him to nine years, five months in prison.
Chraging papers gave this account of what happened:
A man was living with his wife and daughter at the mobile home where the shooting took place June 16, 2019. He let people stay there sometimes, which is what Allen, 52, and the man who Wade injured were doing.
One account was that the victim who survived went inside, there were gunshots, and that man came out saying he’d been shot. That’s when Allen went inside and was shot as well. Wade had been in a bedroom of the home.
A different account was that the victims were in the living room and went to the bedroom after they heard gunshots.
Wade also fired shots at the home owner when he approached, “narrowly missing him,” the charging papers said. Detectives later found 18 shots were fired.
Wade allegedly had slurred speech and said he’d blacked out and didn’t remember anything.
He surrendered without incident after a 90-minute standoff.
Allen died at the scene. The victim who survived said he’d had no problems with Wade previously.
Attorney Warren Corey-Boulet represented Wade.
“We’re grateful for the grace extended by Mr. Allen’s mother to Jovan at the sentencing hearing,” Corey-Boulet said in a statement to The News Tribune.
The other victim “forgave Jovan, and we’re thankful for that as well,” the statement said. “Mr. Wade, who had no significant criminal history prior to these charges, accepted responsibility and a substantial penalty. This case was carefully negotiated, and I believe a fair result was reached.”
