Crash sent car through Spanaway fence and injured the driver, hit-and-run charges say
A 21-year-old has been charged in connection to a hit-and-run crash earlier this year in which another driver hit a house in Spanaway.
A bench warrant was issued for the 21-year-old’s arrest after prosecutors charged him with vehicular assault and hit-and-run Friday in Pierce County Superior Court.
Charging papers give this account:
The crash happened Feb. 29 at 167th and A Street South.
Deputies found a red Dodge Neon in a yard there, where it had gone through a fence and hit a home.
Crews cut the doors off the Neon to get the driver out and took him to Tacoma General Hospital with broken ribs and wounds to his spleen, liver and lungs.
“He was intubated in the Emergency Department and taken right into surgery to address the internal bleeding,” the declaration for determination of probable cause said.
Deputies also found a Chevrolet Malibu outside the fence. Witnesses said the driver fled the scene on foot.
Investigators watched video from the area that appeared to show the Malibu speeding west on 167th just before a loud crash.
Investigators determined the Malibu was going 69 miles per hour one second before the crash. The speed limit is 25 mph.
Various documents in the Malibu helped identify the 21-year-old suspect, who later allegedly told someone that a car ran a stop sign in front of him. Deputies haven’t been able to reach him.
