Security guard at County-City Building arrested for lighting firecracker in men’s restroom

A security guard at the County-City Building in downtown Tacoma was arrested Tuesday for allegedly throwing a firecracker in a men’s restroom toilet.

The 37-year-old was taken into custody at his Parkland home and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of second-degree arson.

The incident took place about 3:15 a.m. Sunday.

A fire alarm activated on the building’s second floor and when firefighters responded, they found a firecracker in one of the toilets.

Later, security guards checked surveillance footage and saw one of their co-workers using his access card to enter the building three minutes before the smoke alarm went off.

He returned from his break and immediately walked into the second floor men’s restroom, then exited the restroom around the time of the fire alarm, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

A motive was not immediately known.
