University Place man fatally shot mom after she drunkenly threw things at him, records say
A University Place man killed his mother because he couldn’t tolerate her drunken berating of him any longer, court records say.
On Monday, Pierce County prosecutors charged 22-year-old Corey Manley with first-degree murder for Friday’s shooting death of his 43-year-old mom, who has not yet been identified.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon.
Charging papers give this account of the homicide:
Manley called 911 about 6:35 p.m. and told dispatchers he’d shot his mother eight times inside their Alpine Vista apartment in the 2400 block of 70th Avenue West because she “had been throwing items at him,” records say.
When deputies arrived, they arrested Manley on the sidewalk outside the complex. His mother was pronounced dead inside the home.
A 9 mm semi-automatic handgun was found at the scene.
Manley allegedly told investigators his mom was an alcoholic and had mentally abused him most of his life. His sister and a family friend later confirmed that.
On the night of the shooting, Manley said he used the bathroom and went to make coffee, but his mother started yelling at him for not washing his hands.
He went into his bedroom to defuse the confrontation, but she began pounding on the door, yelling and cussing.
“A short time later she opened the door and then threw a popcorn tin and cookies at him,” prosecutors wrote in charging papers.
Manley picked up a handgun and pointed it at his mom, telling her he’d shoot if threw anything else or took a step toward him, records say.
When she stepped toward him, Manley fired.
Detectives found seven shell casings in Manley’s bedroom.
