Suspected shooter booked into jail in connection to fatal Puyallup drive-by

A suspect in a fatal drive-by shooting in Puyallup last month has been booked into jail.

Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Larry Wayne Mayhand with first-degree and second-degree murder for the death of Antonio Erb.

He pleaded not guilty at arraignment Wednesday. Pierce County Superior Court Judge Diana L. Kiesel set bail at $1.5 million.

The alleged getaway driver, 21-year-old Patrick Shepherd, pleaded not guilty to the same charges at arraignment last month.

Charging papers make these allegations about what happened:

Officers responded to the shooting March 15 and found 20-year-old Erb on the front steps of a home in the 600 block of 8th Street Northwest. He had a gunshot wound to his chest and died at the scene.

A vehicle was seen driving away.

A friend said he and Erb had been working out and returned to his home, and that he was standing by his car when he heard about 12 shots and Erb yelled his name and collapsed.

A few days later police got a tip that Mayhand was the shooter.

Investigators learned Mayhand and Shepherd knew each other and that Shepherd had a tan 2000 Dodge Durango that seemed to match images from surveillance footage of the vehicle seen leaving the shooting scene.

Shepherd allegedly picked up Mayhand in Puyallup, and they were on their way to Tacoma when they stopped at a discount variety store on River Road.

They saw Erb drive by in the parking lot, and Mayhand told Shepherd to follow the vehicle.

Mayhand had a handgun in his lap, called someone and asked what to do.

After they followed him for a while, Erb parked, and Mayhand leaned out the passenger window and fired.

Shepherd and Mayhand allegedly washed the Durango and talked about how to make it look different, and drove to Portland. They stayed there for a night in a motel, then Mayhand went to Long Beach, California, and Shepherd came back to Washington, court records allege.

Records show Shepherd was booked into the Pierce County Jail Tuesday evening.
